Overview

The American Society of Highway Engineers Scholarship Foundation (a 501(c)(3) organization) was established to provide scholarships to students who show exceptional leadership, character and interest in the Civil Engineering field.

Award Amount

The number and amount of scholarships will be determined by the ASHE National Scholarship Committee.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

1. Attend college within a State where there is an ASHE Section. Provide evidence of enrollment.

2. Be currently enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program at an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) college / university.

3. Be enrolled in a Civil Engineering related program.

4. Not be a past recipient.

Evaluation Criteria

Final selection of the scholarship winners will be decided by a selected scholarship advisory committee based on the following criteria:

25% – Letter of Recommendation: Each applicant must submit one recent (within the last 6 months) letter of recommendation, from someone familiar with the applicant’s educational and career goals or from someone in the community (such as an employer, clergy, Boy or Girl Scout leader). The recommendation cannot be from a relative.

30% Application Essay – Each applicant must submit the required essay for the topic shown on page 3 of 4.

20% – Extracurricular Activities or achievements, Community Service/ Volunteering

15% – College Transcript

5% – Student ASHE member OR participation/volunteering at ASHE events/meetings.

5% – Complete Application package in single PDF file (Page 2, 3, 4 of application form; Resume, and Letter of Recommendation)

Note: Recipients who interrupt their studies during the academic year for which the scholarship is awarded shall forfeit the scholarship. Exceptions are given for military or medical reasons.

The Recipient(s) will be notified in advance of the 2025 ASHE National Conference held in Pocono Mountains Kalahari Resort where the winner will be announced Saturday June 7,2025.

Brian Szoch
Brian Szoch2019/2020 Jim McGee Recipient
Brian is a senior at the University of Georgia majoring in Civil Engineering, and he expects to graduate in December 2019. Brian is involved with ASCE, ATO, and Student Ambassador for College of Engineering. Brian has several impressive internships already under his belt, including an opportunity to be a part of GDOT’s Northwest Corridor project, as well as an internship with Brasfield & Gorrie on an $80 million bridge construction project in Tuscaloosa. Brian is seeking a career in the construction industry, with specific goal of becoming president of a privately-owned general contractor.
Natalie Daugherty
Natalie Daugherty2019/2020 Jim McGee Recipient
Natalie is a junior at Georgia Tech majoring in Civil Engineering, with a concentration in transit, and is also pursuing a minor in Global Engineering Leadership. She expects to graduate in May 2020. Natalie has taken advantage of multiple study abroad opportunities in Pacific and the Netherlands, is a member of ASCE, Chi Epsilon (current Secretary), member of sailing club, and board member and local project coordinator for GA Tech Trailblazers organization, leading service projects for the Atlanta Beltline and multiple state parks. Natalie has multiple internships with Black & Veatch and recently completed internship this summer with Hensel Phelps Construction working on concourse expansion project at Nashville Int’l. Airport. Inspired by previous experience in the Pacific and Netherlands, Natalie would like to live and work abroad in the future, with special interest in bringing lessons learned from other cultures to help build more walkable, bikeable, and livable cities here.
